Accreditation For Growth
What is AFG?

Accreditation for Growth or "AFG" is a unique accreditation process that helps direct the district through a comprehensive self-assessment of all its programs and procedures.  NBC will implemnet a variety of strategic planning elements as a vehicle for growing in student performance and the institution’s capacity to affect that growth.

What is Strategic Planning?
Strategic planning is the means by which an organization continually recreates itself for extraordinary purposes. Implicit in this definition is the concentration of all efforts, resources, activities, and energies toward defined goals. Planning is based on the organization’s vision of a preferred future.

What steps have we taken?
NBC began the self-assessment process two years ago.  In the first year, a strategic planning committee was formed.  It was comprised of school board memvbers, administrators, teachers, parents, and students.  This committee helped develop a vision statement, belief statements, and the profile of a Northern graduate and these documents can be viewed if one clicks on the tabs to the right.  AFG Objectives for Academics, Cultural, and Multiple and Divers Paths to  Graduation were established and planning committees were identified in both the Middle School and the High School.  The task of these committees is to establish stragegies to accomplish specific objectives for each goal.  In addition, focus on "Essential Skills" was established and a committee formed to address this very important component.

During the 2007 - 2008 school year, Internal Coordinators were appointed.  Ms. Zaic and Ms. Stella were appointed to the high school and the middle school respectively.  In addition, a Steering Committee comprised of the superintendent, assistant superintendent, both building principals and both internal coordinators has been formed.  The Steering Committee will monitor the process being made by the Middle School and the High School committees.

What is the Current Status of AFG?
The Academic, Culture, Multiple and Diverse Paths to Graduation, and Essential Skills
Committees in both buildings (15 in each building) have been working throughout the 2007-2008 school year toward developing action plans to accomplish the district's three strategic planning objectives. After determining the district's current proposals and progress relative to each area, and projecting the changes needed in order to accomplish the district's objectives over the next seven years, the committees have focused on investigating and incorporating research-based best practice ideas for change. Every staff member has been involved in this effort. The work sessions have transpired during scheduled meeting time (faculty/department/team) as well as during in-service days. Staff members have expressed excitement and are invigorated by the proposed changes that will be enacted district-wide as a result of this strategic planning process.

Throughout the year, the Steering Committee has received updates on each committee’s
progress. Opportunities for horizontal articulation (collaboration among committees
recommending similar changes) and vertical articulation (collaboration among middle school and high school committees of a similar nature) have brought clarity and cohesiveness to the district in this comprehensive planning initiative.

Our internal coordinators, Mrs. Cathy Zaic (HS) and Ms. Amy Stella (MS), have combined and consolidated the many ideas generated by these committees. The following chart embodies the prioritized initiatives. The internal coordinators’ recommendation for moving forward with AFG includes consolidating the 15 committees from each building into four coherent committees: ACADEMIC, CULTURE, MULTIPLE and DIVERSE PATHS TO GRADUATION, and PROFILE OF A GRADUATE. These committees will continue to develop the plans that this year’s committees have developed, and begin constructing implementation plans for moving forward.
